A successful brand photoshoot doesn’t happen by chance. The images that look effortless are usually the result of careful preparation, collaboration, and thought. As a photographer, part of my role is to guide clients through this process so they feel confident and excited on shoot day. But there are also steps you can take to prepare like a pro.
Start with your wardrobe. Clothes play a huge part in how your brand comes across, so choose outfits that reflect your brand colours and style. If your business is modern and minimal, simple clean lines will translate beautifully. If it’s bold and creative, don’t be afraid to introduce colour, pattern, or texture. Always bring a few options to give us variety on the day. And above all - wear something you feel comfortable in. If you don’t feel good, it will show in the photos!
Other important shoot details
Props are another important consideration. These don’t have to be complicated, but think about the items that represent your brand. That might be your laptop and coffee mug for a personal brand shoot, your tools if you’re a maker, or your products if you’re a retailer. Props help tell the story of your business and give us plenty of ways to create interesting, authentic images with my styling included.
Mood boards can be incredibly useful too. Collecting inspiration - whether it’s colours, poses, or general vibes - helps clarify what you want from the shoot and ensures we’re aligned creatively. I often share my Pinterest boards with clients ahead of time to build that shared vision.
On a practical level, make sure you’ve had a good night’s sleep, eaten something, and allowed yourself plenty of time on the day. Nothing kills confidence like rushing or feeling flustered. Remember that this shoot is for you, and it’s worth slowing down to enjoy the process. Finally, come with an open mind. Some of the best photos often happen in between the planned shots, when you relax, laugh, or move naturally. My job is to create space for those moments, and your job is simply to be yourself.
Preparing well for your brand photoshoot means you’ll walk away with a gallery of images that feel authentically you - and that you’ll be proud to use across your marketing. The more thought you put in beforehand, the more powerful the results will be.
